Role of the Security Officer Regarding Fires
A security officer, also known as a security guard, is likely to be the first person at the scene of a fire at his workplace. The role of security officers during emergencies such as fires varies depending on the demands and expectations of his employer and expectations should be thoroughly documented and explained before the guard shows up on site.
Prevention
A security guard should always watch for potential fire hazards while patrolling or maintaining his/her post. This can include unusual sparks or heat from electrical equipment or storing combustible or flammable items near heat sources. This also includes visually inspecting fire extinguishers to ensure that they are not past their listed best before dates and haven't been damaged.
Phone Calls
If there is an alarm going off, smoke or other signs of a fire, a security officer may be expected to confirm the fire. Once he has visually confirmed a fire, he may be expected to activate the fire alarm (if it's not already ringing) and call the fire department. He should also call his supervisor or client to inform them of the situation. The officer's own safety should be a priority and he should keep in touch with another officer, his supervisor or the dispatcher while waiting for emergency services.
Evacuation
If the fire occurs in a crowded area, like a shopping mall, the security officer should follow her employer's emergency procedures. This will most likely include helping to direct the crowd to the nearest emergency exit. With large crowds, there may be crowd control duties both inside and outside of the structure, along with helping to direct emergency personnel when they arrive on the scene. Even before a fire happens, the officer should always ensure that items aren't stored in or obstructing corridors and exits likely to be used as fire escape routes.
Other Roles
Depending on where they work, security officers may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials if there is a fire or explosion at the job site. If an employer expects a security guard to provide any sort of support during an emergency involving chemicals, radiation or other dangerous substances, the employer needs to provide prior training that meets with Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements. A security officer has the right to know in advance if her job site has potentially dangerous substances stored on site so she can familiarize herself with any special training or procedures that may be needed if a fire breaks out .
